Fra Luca Bartolomeo de Pocioli

"The Father of Accounting & Bookkeeping"

Fra Luca Bartolomeo de Pacioli (1445 – 1517)

Luca Pacioli was an Italian mathematician, and educator and a Franciscan Friar. His first printed and published textbook, ‘Summa de Arithmetica, Geometrica, proportioni et propotionalita’ (Everything about Arithmetic, Geometry and Proportions) was printed via a printing press, and published in 1494.

His book introduced the concept of double entry bookkeeping and the use of the debit and credit system that is still in use today, more than 500 years later. In his book, he also wrote that the debit and credit sides of the ledger are equal and introduced the rules of bookkeeping and the ledger.
